claudiajean's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- swirling- XF First, she didn't think about him for an entire hour. Then, half a day, and then, months after he was gone, she didn't think about him for an entire day. She had been distracted, busy, at work, and she looked up suddenly. I WANT TO BELIEVE. Except that she didn't. Learning she could conceivably live a life without him with was like a weight off her shoulders. "We'll find him, Agent Scully." he had said, when he walked in to see her staring at the poster. She nodded, but couldn't think of a response that wouldn't have been a lie. Her mother was coming over for dinner. It was the first time since the night her father had died. She didn't know why, it had been years, but she had always gone home. Usually, she figured, there were bullets in her walls, or the door had been busted out. Her apartment just wasn't safe. She didn't want her mother there, ever. Of course, with the recent changes in her life, her apartment was a little more put together for a longer period of time. She was going to make dinner, but truth be told she had only been home for 10 minutes and she was feeling a little off center. When the door buzzed, she opened the door, and it was anyone but her mother. "What are you doing here?" she had left polite a long time ago. He knew that, and wasn't offended. "You know, agent Scully, you look a little pale. I thought I'd better check up on you." he said, knowing full well the wrath that was about to come upon him. "Check up on me?" she said, not moving to let him in. "Yeah." He lifted up a plastic bag. "It's root beer in a bottle. I thought we could just pretend it's beer." she reeled back a little. Root beer, she hadn't drunken root beer since that night in the car, when she had looked at the ice tea, and decided that he was the type to like root beer better, since- the door buzzed again. "Scully?" "You have to go, that's my mother." she snapped, suddenly irritated that he was in her hall, leaning against her door frame the way he was, calling her Scully like he own her name, like he had been to her apartment a million times, like he belonged there when he so obviously didn't. The door buzzed again. "You wanna let her in?" she reached around and pushed the button, unlocking the door. "Can I meet her?" "Why did you come?" she asked quietly. "I just... I thought you looked a little off." The elevator opened, and she saw her mother step off, and hesitantly walk towards her daughter's open door and the unknown man leaning standing in front of it. "I'm not off." she lied, and he stepped aside. "Mrs. Scully?" the older woman smiled at him, even though her daughter was glaring at the man. "Yes?" "I'm Agent John Doggett, your daughters partner." he said, sticking out his hand. She shook it. Dana had mentioned very little about this new partner and she hadn't pushed it. "It's nice to meet you." She said. "He was just leaving, actually." Dana said, stepping aside to let her mother in. "If that's what you say, Agent Scully." he said, holding the bag out to her. She had to take it, so she did, holding it away from her body and watching him walk down the hall with a walk that only FBI agents could achieve. "He had beautiful eyes, doesn't he?" her mother asked, hanging up her coat. Dana's lip trembled as she turned into her mother's waiting hug. "I hadn't noticed." she cried. In the morning, she sat at her kitchen table, staring at the case of bottle root beer. It was unhealthy to be afraid of a soft drink. She picked on up and twisted the cap off with little effort. The smell made her stomach turn, and she knew it wasn't morning sickness. She figured, it was hard to forget someone when there was a constant reminder nestled inside her. She walked over to the sink and watched the brown liquid swirl down the drain. end 9:58 p.m. - 2001-08-09 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
